Embarking on outdoor adventures as a couple has been a cornerstone of our shared journey, and here at Camp Schmac, we revel in the thrill of camping during all four seasons. From the balmy nights of summer, exploring new nooks in the Sierras, to the crisp, breathtaking beauty of fall, our love for camping knows no seasonal bounds.
Yet, it's during the winter months, where the landscape transforms into a serene wonderland, that we find a unique and tranquil joy in facing the cold head-on. The past two winters at Camp Schmac have gifted us with the magical touch of snow, prompting us to refine our skills for comfortable winter camping. As winter enthusiasts, my husband and I are thrilled to share our seasoned tips to ensure that you can embrace the chilly embrace of winter camping at Camp Schmac with warmth and ease.
Keep reading as we share our TOP FIVE TIPS to make your stay with us during winter months 👇
Tip Number One:
Insulated Sleeping Gear!
Invest in high-quality, cold-rated sleeping bags and sleeping pads. Look for bags with a temperature rating lower than the expected nighttime temperatures. Additionally, use a closed-cell foam pad or an insulated air mattress underneath your sleeping bag to provide insulation from the cold ground. When the two of us camp together we love to use our double size 23zero Royal Sleeping Bag that’s rated to 25° F and keeps us toasty in our roof-top tent! When we aren’t in our roof top tent, we love using DeepSleep Overland mattresses in our ground tents, and they are ready to use in a matter of seconds. During really cold nights, I’ll resort to using my old Army sleep system that’s rated down to below freezing, for good reasons!
Tip Number Two:
Layered Clothing!
Dressing in layers is crucial for staying warm in cold weather. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin, add an insulating layer for warmth, and finish with a waterproof and windproof outer layer to protect against the elements. Don't forget a hat and gloves to retain heat! My favorite way to layer is in anything from Off-Road Vixens. Their t-shirts are moisture wicking, which make for perfect layers and work t-shirts, and their cold weather apparel is made for ladies who snow mobile in mind! I’ve always found myself cozy and comfortable while camping when layered with any Off-Road Vixens sweatshirt, beanie, sherpa, or wind breaker. Tip Number Three:
Hot Drinks and Hearty Meals!
This one is often overlooked but can make a HUGE difference. Consuming hot beverages and hearty meals can help keep your body temperature up. Bring a portable stove or campfire-friendly cooking equipment to prepare warm meals. Pack hot drinks like tea, coffee, or hot cocoa to enjoy during the day and before bedtime. Eating high-calorie foods before sleeping can also generate warmth. Our favorite combo is our Jetboil and a hearty Mountain House meal. Making easy, one-pot meals like a gluten-free chili-mac is always a campground favorite as well.
Tip Number Four:
Proper Tent Setup!
Set up your tent strategically to maximize warmth. Choose a flat spot, preferably on higher ground to avoid cold air pockets. Make sure your tent is well-ventilated to prevent condensation, but keep the vents partially closed to retain heat. Consider using a four-season tent designed for winter conditions.
Don’t be afraid to add a heater to your tent set-up! There are lots of modern options on the market now to stay warm and cozy all night long, as long as you keep up the appropriate power supply. You can combine a portable battery like a Jackery and a heated blanket, or heat your tent up before you sleep with a Mr. Heater Buddy.
Our personal favorite tent set-up - the roof-top tent on our 4runner or Tacoma, with our diesel heater keeping us toasty all night long. This does require us to keep diesel on hand with an external power supply. We went low budget with our heater and got one for under $100 on Amazon, but you can spend as much as you’re willing to for convenience when it comes to heating your tent!
Tip Number Five:
Last but not least, Stay Active During the Day!
Keep your blood flowing by engaging in activities during the day. Hiking, or even just a brisk walk around the campsite can help maintain body warmth. Physical activity generates heat, and staying active will prevent you from getting too cold. We love finding nearby trails and activities near our campsite to spend the day adventuring and exploring! During your stay at Camp Schmac, you can find yourself doing plenty of adventuring around beautiful, Gold Country, Ca for the day.
Remember to check the weather forecast before your trip and be prepared for sudden changes. It's also essential to inform someone about your plans and expected return time. Safety should always be a top priority during winter camping adventures. Enjoy your cold weather camping experience at Camp Schmac!
